Professor Wael Awad is a highly respected consultant cardiothoracic surgeon based in London. He is renowned for his specialist expertise in coronary bypass surgery, beating heart coronary heart bypass surgery (minimally invasive), aortic valve replacement (minimally invasive), mitral valve repair, aortic root surgery, and heart failure.
Professor Awad, who has a demonstrated commitment to excellence, is also highly proficient in total arterial revascularisation, redo cardiac surgery, and pericardectomy. With a stellar background, he holds an MD from the University of London and an MBBS from Imperial College London. He also holds esteemed fellowships to both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh since 1993 and 1994, respectively.
He trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the most prestigious teaching hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton, The London Chest, Guy's, St Bartholomew's, and St Thomas Hospitals, with some of the leading surgeons in the world. As a trainee, Professor Awad was also awarded a highly sought-after British Heart Foundation grant to conduct research on ischaemic preconditioning in the immature myocardium.
Currently, Professor Awad serves as the lead surgeon for the transcatheter aortic valve implantation programme and the mechanical circulatory assist and heart failure programmes at Barts Health NHS Trust, where he also holds a consultant position since 2003. He is deeply involved in teaching and training, and is a member of the specialist training committee for cardiothoracic surgery in London.
As a leading figure in his specialty, Professor Awad was also commended for outstanding patient care by the past Secretary of State for Health. His surgical knowledge has also been featured in media outlets such as the BBC and Abu Dhabi channels.
